What hedge funds try to do

Traditional mutual funds mostly buy stocks or bonds and ride the market. Hedge funds have a wider toolkit and generally pursue one of two goals:

  1. Absolute return: Make money across cycles, not just when markets rise.
  2. Diversification: Deliver returns with low correlation to stocks and bonds so the overall portfolio is smoother.

They do this via specialized strategies and active risk management—position sizing, stop-losses, factor hedges, and sometimes dynamic exposure (dialing risk up or down as conditions change).
