What Exactly Is Coffee Syrup?

At its core, coffee syrup is a flavored liquid sweetener designed to blend smoothly into hot or cold drinks. It’s usually made from three key parts:

  • A sweet base (often sugar or a sugar substitute)
  • Water
  • Flavoring (like vanilla, caramel, hazelnut, mocha, pumpkin spice, etc.)

The key is that it dissolves easily, even in iced drinks. Unlike granulated sugar, which can sit stubbornly at the bottom of your glass, coffee syrup mixes in quickly and evenly, so every sip tastes the same.

You’ve probably seen it pumped into drinks at big coffee chains. That’s how they create all those signature flavors: one or two pumps of syrup can completely transform a plain espresso and milk into something that tastes like dessert.
